Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) Requirement for UK Travel
1 October 2024, 4:57 PM
The UK Government is rolling out its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system as part of its goal to digitise border control and improve security. By April 2025, all visitors to the UK who do not require a visa, except British and Irish citizens, will need to obtain an ETA before traveling.
Key Dates:
- Non-European nationals: Eligible travellers can apply for an ETA from 27 November 2024 and will need one to enter the UK from 8 January 2025.
- European nationals: Eligible travellers can apply for an ETA from 5 March 2025, with the requirement starting from 2 April 2025.
What is an ETA?
An ETA is a digital travel permit required for non-visa travellers visiting the UK for up to six months. It allows multiple visits within a two-year period or until the traveller’s passport expires, whichever is sooner.
The cost of an ETA is £10.
Who Needs an ETA?
An ETA is required for:
- Visits of up to six months for tourism, business, family visits, or short-term study.
- Creative workers visiting for up to three months under the Creative Worker visa concession.
- Permitted paid engagements.
- Transit through the UK (including when not going through border control).
How to Apply:
Applications for the ETA can be made via the official UK ETA app or through the UK Government website. For more information and to check when you will need an ETA, visit the official UK ETA page here.
